Hunter Valley Wine Varieties -
Hunter Valley Wine

Hunter Valley Wine - Semillon - Hunter Valley Semillons are traditionally picked in the early part of the vintage with a sugar level of between 10 & 12 degrees baume. The wine is invariably fermented without the use of any oak and the finished wine is one of relatively low alcohol. Semillon, while young is fresh, crisp and with zesty citrus characters, however the magic of Hunter Semillon is only truly realised with age. This remarkable wine can mature and blossom for two decades and beyond and many people believe the wines are at their best around 8-10 years after vintage. The Hunter Valley is recognised as the world’s leader in the production of dry white wines made from Semillon. Nowhere else on the globe do they craft a style even close to the Hunter’s traditional low-alcohol, ageworthy Semillon. Hunter Valley Semillon is widely regarded as Australia’s unique white wine – a Hunter Valley wine style unlike all others, based on unique climatic conditions, Australian ingenuity and more than 150 years of practice.

Hunter Valley Wine - Shiraz - Hunter Valley Shiraz (known as Hermitage or Burgundy until the late 1970s) has established itself as one of Australia’s great red wine styles.

Hunter Valley Wine - Chardonnay - Chardonnay is the world’s most popular white grape variety and the most widely planted white grape variety in Australia. Chardonnay in the Hunter is a white variety of great importance with several producers making some of Australia’s finest styles of Hunter Valley wine.

Hunter Valley Wine - Verdehlo - Due to its natural ability to withstand heat and the occasional bit of rain, Verdelho has become a natural partner to the Hunter and its wines are growing in importance in the Valley. Hunter Verdelho is a naturally full-bodied, fruit driven style of wine that is becoming increasingly popular with Australian wine lovers.

Hunter Valley Wine - Other Varieties - increasingly we are seeing other varieites of Hunter Valley Wine springing up all over the Hunter Valley. Hunter Valley wine varieties such as Sangiovese, Chambourcin,  Pinot Gris and Gewurz to name a few - giving the area a distinctive european flavour.

McWilliam’s Mount Pleasant Estate – nestled in the slopes of the Brokenback Range in NSW’s lower Hunter Valley – was established in 1921 by legendary winemaker, the late Maurice O’Shea.

Today, the Hunter Valley is widely regarded as the home of semillon, and McWilliam’s as the producer of Australia’s best wines from the variety.

“Australian semillon is usually quite recognisable,” said Mount Pleasant Chief Winemaker, Phillip Ryan. “When young it is austere and fresh. It has a high natural acidity even in the warm Hunter Valley region where it can age wonderfully. After some years of bottle age, it tends to develop rich buttery toasty flavours.”

POKOLBIN ESTATE

Boutique vineyards have long maintained the traditions of wine regions by producing what the region does best rather than what the current market demands. The Hunter Valley is famous for Semillon & Shiraz. Pokolbin Estate is all about Semillon & Shiraz. We have received 125 show awards in the past 8 years for our two flagship wines.

Wombat Crossing Vineyard is a micro-boutique producer of fine table wines in Pokolbin, NSW, AustraliaThe first wines under our label were vintaged in 2005.

The range of wines, made off-site by winemaker Scott Stephens, is modest in size but exceptional in quality.  Our vineyards were established in 1996, planted to the traditional forte of varieties for the Hunter Valley - Semillon, Shiraz and Chardonnay.  Each wine inherits its characteristics from the soils in its individual paddock vineyard, naturally varied by the climate experienced during that vintage at our property.  The owner undertakes all vigneron roles on the property.  We use low input viticultural processes that result in low yielding vines, and we hand-pick the grapes each vintage.
